Greylands Farm is a 200 acre mixed farm on the North Yorkshire coast.  There is a mixture of arable fields, which grow crops such as wheat, barley, oats etc.  All the other fields are grass and it is in these fields that we keep our livestock.

We have a herd of beef cattle usually about 20 animals, these are kept for their beef.  The cows calve once a year in the spring/summer months and usually live outside all year.  They live near to the farmyard in the summer so we can keep a close watch on them and their calves, and in the winter they live in the sheltered wooded valley between Hinderwell and Newton Mulgrave or on the grassy banks down to the harbour at Port Mulgrave. They are of various breeds, including Blonde d’Aqutaine, Aberdeen Angus, Limousin, Hereford and Simmental.  They are therefore a range of colours from golden yellow, reddish brown, grey and dark brown.  All of the cows are tame, most being very friendly, and used to people.

We have a flock of sheep, mainly of Masham and Mule breeds.  They lamb in the months of January and February and the lambs are sold around June.  All the arable crops grown on our farm are used as feed for our animals.  We also have a very friendly sheepdog, usually a horse and there are cats (if you can catch them).

The farm is within the North York Moors National Park, and part of the farm is within a conservation area.  There are many types of birds and wildlife, which live on our farm including herons, badgers, foxes and roe deer.   There are lots of places to go for a walk.  We have nice quiet places where visitors can take a picnic, some are near to a local stream and the children can play in the water – with supervision.

Part of our land is on the coast and there is a private access down to the water’s edge – not a sandy beach but large rocks and grassy paths – another private picnic area.  This site is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) as it has rare fossils, and is consequently protected.  The view across to Kettleness is very special.  The ‘Cleveland Way’, a national footpath, runs through the farm along the top of the cliffs, giving spectacular views of the rugged coastline.  Port Mulgrave, the small picturesque harbour, is situated on our land and only a few hundred yards from Greylands Cottage.  The Heritage Coast covers our land, as it is an area of natural beauty, and is protected and maintained by the agency.

We like to show our visitors around the farm, either by taking them on a long walk or having a ride on the Quad bike – a four-wheel motorbike – really a big boy’s toy – but great fun!!

Visitors are most welcome to help on the farm either by coming along to help us feed the livestock, move them from field to field, or watch when the vets calls.  Visitors usually enjoy watching the sheep being dipped or sheared.  Children enjoy feeding the baby lambs in the spring and the cows usually calve in the summer.  As it is a working farm there is always something to be done.

We believe that our past visitors return again and again because it is such a special place to take a holiday.  We are situated close to lots of local amenities and there are plenty of local hostelries to visit.  We trust you will have a pleasant and relaxing holiday with us
