GREYLANDS COTTAGE is a sandstone dwelling adjoining the 17th Century,
Greylands Farmhouse (A Grade II Listed
Building) on a working farm within the North York Moors National Park, and 700
yards from the cliff tops and spectacular views of the Yorkshire coastline.
The cottage has been used as a holiday home
since 1989 and more than half our visitors return more than once, and in some
cases every few months.
The farm is a 200 acre mixed farm with sheep,
beef cattle and horses. On arable land
we grow barley, beans and wheat. We
will be pleased to show visitors around the farmyard, which is very popular
with the children. If you visit in the
springtime, you can watch the sheep giving birth and assist with feeding the
pet lambs. The cows calve at varying
times of the year and you are most welcome to watch.
Greylands Cottage is situated behind Greylands
Farmhouse at the northern end of the village’s High Street, close to the Church
and the turning to Port Mulgrave.
Hinderwell is a small village, but well
supplied with shops and amenities, these include: Garage, Post Office/Sweet
Shop, Butcher, Hairdresser, Beauty Salon, Fish & Chip Shop, Doctors’
Surgery, Tennis Courts/Sports Hall, and two churches. There are three Inns within 250 yards of the cottage, all
serve food and children are welcome.
Hinderwell is on the main Middlesbrough to Whitby bus route, a bus passes the farm
entrance every hour - very useful for getting home from long walks!
Hinderwell is ideally situated for exploring
the local countryside. The area abounds
with pleasant country walks and there are several easy circular routes from the
cottage as well as longer distance walks.
The farm also has land on part of the Cleveland Way, a lovely cliff-top
walk through the Heritage Coast, which is easily explored from our base in
Hinderwell. We can provide maps and
suggestions as to other local walks.
The picturesque village of Runswick Bay is 1 mile south, and the fishing
village of Staithes is 1 mile to the north.
Whitby is 15 minutes drive south.
Venture inland and explore the North Yorkshire
Moors and Dales and the historic City of York.
James Herriot country is an hours’ drive west. “Goathland”, the village ‘Aidensfield’ in ITV’s Heartbeat is 12
miles away. Greylands Farm and Port
Mulgrave were used as locations for filming back in 1994. There are many local attractions and there
is a selection of Tourist Information handouts in the cottage.
Greylands Farm is a wonderful place for
wildlife, as part of the farm is in a “coastal habitat conservation zone”,
which ensures that wildlife and the environment are protected. We actively encourage birds and wildlife to
live and breed in this part of the farm. It is not accessible by using public
footpaths, so you will need to be shown where to go, it is our secret
really! We are also involved with the ‘Stewardship Scheme’ in promoting
the welfare of local wildlife, providing areas of sanctuary in un-farmed land
and structuring our farming activities to have the least effects on the natural
environment.
